OVERVIEW
Opened in 1913 as the Essondale Branch of the Provincial Hospital for the Insane, named for Dr. Henry Esson Young, it grew into a large campus with its own farm. The West Lawn building has stood empty since 1983; the Red Fish Healing Centre opened on the grounds in 2021.
REPORTED ACTIVITY
The abandoned West Lawn is the most-reported building on the site, with accounts of voices, footsteps and figures in the wards. The campus's appearance has made it a standing film location for Smallville, The X-Files and Stargate Atlantis.

The grounds are publicly accessible; the derelict buildings are closed and patrolled.
