Howard Street Cemetery
FOLLOWSalem, MA
DIRECTIONS →OVERVIEW
A burying ground established in 1801 on ground near the field where, in September 1692, the elderly farmer Giles Corey was pressed to death under heavy stones for refusing to enter a plea. His reported last words were "more weight." Legend holds he cursed the town and its sheriff as he died.
REPORTED ACTIVITY
Local tradition ties Corey's apparition to the cemetery as an omen of disaster, and later Essex County sheriffs' health troubles were folklorically blamed on his curse.
VISITING
An open public cemetery; visitors are asked to be respectful.
