Proctor's Ledge
FOLLOWSalem, MA
DIRECTIONS →OVERVIEW
A rocky ledge below Gallows Hill established by the Gallows Hill Project in 2016 as the actual site where nineteen people were hanged in 1692, confirming a location first proposed by historian Sidney Perley in the 1920s. A small memorial with a stone wall of inscribed names was dedicated on July 19, 2017, the 325th anniversary of the first hangings. The people executed here were victims of a moral panic, not criminals.
