Salem Witch Trials Memorial
FOLLOWSalem, MA
DIRECTIONS →OVERVIEW
A memorial beside the Old Burying Point honoring the fourteen women and six men wrongly executed during the 1692 witch trials. Designed by architect James Cutler and artist Maggie Smith, it consists of a low granite wall lined with cantilevered stone benches, each inscribed with a victim's name and date of death. It was dedicated on August 5, 1992 by Nobel laureate Elie Wiesel during the trials' 300th anniversary.
REPORTED ACTIVITY
A place of remembrance rather than spectacle; visitors commonly describe a heavy, solemn atmosphere, and some report a sense of presence among the inscribed benches.
VISITING
An open public memorial, free to visit year-round.
