OVERVIEW

A rural bridge on Applewhite Road over Elm Creek, south of the city, is the setting for the Donkey Lady, one of San Antonio's oldest folk legends. Versions dating back generations tell of a settler woman disfigured by fire until her hands and face took on a donkey-like appearance, who is said to have drowned in the creek.

REPORTED ACTIVITY

Visitors report that honking a horn or lingering at the bridge summons a wailing figure or the sound of hooves; the tale is documented in regional folklore collections.

VISITING

A public rural roadway and bridge; the surrounding land is private.
