OVERVIEW

A quiet railroad crossing near Shane and Villamain Roads on the city's South Side is the focus of San Antonio's most famous urban legend, which claims a school bus stalled on the tracks was struck by a train, killing the children aboard. No record of such a crash at this crossing has been found, and the "uphill" roll is attributed to the grade and a road-surface illusion.

REPORTED ACTIVITY

For generations people have stopped cars in neutral on the tracks and reported them seeming to be pushed clear, sometimes leaving small handprints in powder dusted on the trunk.

VISITING

A public roadway; the crossing sees real train traffic, so caution is essential.
