OVERVIEW

In 1651, facing defeat by French forces, the surviving Kalinago of Grenada went over the cliffs at the northern point of the island rather than be taken. The French named the place Le Morne des Sauteurs — the hill of the leapers — and the town below is Sauteurs.

HISTORY

The site is a place of national memory in Grenada and is treated as a memorial to the island's indigenous people.

REPORTED ACTIVITY

The cliffs are widely reported locally as a place where the events of 1651 are still present. This is a memorial to a people's destruction and should be recorded as such, not as an attraction.

VISITING

The cliff top is accessible from Sauteurs; the site adjoins the churchyard.
