OVERVIEW
Designed by architect Cass Gilbert and opened in 1934 on Long Island Sound to treat children with tuberculosis using open-air "heliotherapy," the campus was later repurposed as a home for the elderly and, by the 1970s, a state psychiatric facility, before closing in 1996; the grounds are now part of Seaside State Park.
REPORTED ACTIVITY
Visitors and former staff report shifting shadows, unexplained voices, and a persistent sense of unease in and around the shuttered main buildings, which many attribute to the facility's decades treating vulnerable patients.
VISITING
The state park grounds are open to the public; the deteriorating main buildings are fenced off and closed to entry.
