OVERVIEW

Payette Lake, a deep glacial lake at McCall in central Idaho, has been the site of reported sightings of a large aquatic creature since at least 1920, with local Native American oral tradition describing an evil spirit in its depths predating settler accounts.

REPORTED ACTIVITY

A 1944 wave of sightings, including one by a group of six witnesses and roughly 30 people that summer per contemporary Time Magazine coverage, made national news; witnesses describe a serpentine body with three humps, and reports continued intermittently through later decades under the name "Sharlie," chosen in a 1954 community naming contest.

VISITING

Payette Lake and the town of McCall are open to the public.
