OVERVIEW

A distinctive traprock ridge in Hamden whose silhouette resembles a giant lying on his back, preserved today as Sleeping Giant State Park and long a focus of hiking and local folklore.

REPORTED ACTIVITY

According to Quinnipiac oral tradition, the ridge is the spirit Hobbomock, who in anger reshaped the course of a nearby river and was cast into an eternal sleep by the benevolent spirit Kiehtan to prevent further harm; the legend is retold in local histories and interpretive materials rather than treated as a paranormal report.

VISITING

A public state park with extensive hiking trails, open year-round.
