The Snallygaster
FOLLOWMiddletown, MD
DIRECTIONS →OVERVIEW
A legendary winged beast reported in the hills of Frederick County since German immigrants settled the area in the 1730s, its name derived from "Schneller Geist" ("quick spirit"). It became a regional sensation during a 1909 newspaper craze and again in the early 1930s.
REPORTED ACTIVITY
Early accounts described a huge winged creature carrying off livestock; historians treat the 1909 stories largely as a newspaper hoax, though the legend endures and has its own local museum.
VISITING
A folklore legend of the South Mountain and Middletown Valley region; no single visitor site.
