OVERVIEW
takayna / the Tarkine is the largest tract of cool temperate rainforest in Australia. The thylacine — the Tasmanian tiger — was hunted under government bounty, and the last known animal died at Hobart Zoo on 7 September 1936. The species was declared extinct in 1986.
HISTORY
Bounties paid on over 2,000 thylacines between 1888 and 1909 are documented in government records; the true toll was higher.
REPORTED ACTIVITY
Sightings have been reported continuously since 1936, including by park rangers and experienced bushwalkers, and are logged by the Tasmanian government. No confirmed physical evidence has emerged in nearly ninety years. Recorded here as the best-documented cryptid case in Australia, and one where the animal certainly existed.
VISITING
Remote wilderness; access via Corinna and the Western Explorer. Conditions change fast and services are minimal.
