OVERVIEW

A Kirkbride-plan psychiatric hospital that operated from 1874 to 1993, treating patients ranging from Civil War veterans to children; the buildings were later restored and repurposed by Ohio University for offices, classrooms, and the Kennedy Museum of Art.

REPORTED ACTIVITY

Reports describe disembodied voices, footsteps, and a recurring figure called Mary in the old wards; the three patient cemeteries on the grounds, holding nearly 2,000 unclaimed burials, are also described as a focus of activity.

VISITING

The grounds and museum are open to the public; the cemeteries are publicly accessible.
