Trindade Island — the photographs of 16 January 1958

OVERVIEW

At noon on 16 January 1958 the Brazilian ship Almirante Saldanha, taking part in International Geophysical Year projects, was preparing to leave Trindade Island. Captain Viegas, on deck with scientists and crew, saw a flying object with a ring around it like Saturn; everyone on deck reportedly saw it at the same time.

HISTORY

The object came in from the east, flew toward the island's Pico Desejado, made a steep turn and left quickly to the northwest. The photographer Almiro Baraúna was asked to photograph it and, from the quarterdeck, said he had.
