OVERVIEW
A pair of arched stone tunnels on Valley Creek Road where the road passes under the old Pennsylvania Railroad embankment north of Downingtown, Chester County. One-lane, dark and wet, they are a local landmark and the setting of the county's best-known legend.
HISTORY
The embankment and tunnels belong to the nineteenth-century railroad; the road is older.
REPORTED ACTIVITY
The legend, told for generations and printed in the Daily Local News, is of a woman who hanged herself from the tunnel after drowning her baby in the creek, and of a car that stalls in the tunnel while a baby cries. No such deaths are on record; the story is the classic Pennsylvania roadside tale and is recorded as that.
