The Unfinished Church
FOLLOWSt. George's, St. George's Parish
DIRECTIONS →OVERVIEW
Construction began in 1874 to replace St. Peter's Church, but the project was undone by parish disputes, a schism in the congregation, storm damage and lack of funds. Work was abandoned and the shell was left open to the sky. It is now stabilised and maintained by the Bermuda National Trust.
HISTORY
Stone from the site was later reused elsewhere on the island, and the ruin stood derelict for most of the twentieth century before being conserved.
REPORTED ACTIVITY
The ruin has a long-standing local reputation as an uneasy place after dark, and visitors have reported cold spots and the sense of being watched among the arcades. Nothing has been documented beyond anecdote.
VISITING
Open to visitors during daylight hours. The structure is a stabilised ruin — stay on the marked paths.
