DIRECTIONS →OVERVIEW
Sandstone caves cut into the Mississippi River bluff, originally mined for silica sand and later used to grow mushrooms, then developed into a restaurant and nightclub during Prohibition. It is St. Paul's only restored Gangster Era site, tied to the city's 1930s reputation as a haven for figures like John Dillinger.
REPORTED ACTIVITY
A Star Tribune reader poll named it Minnesota's most haunted place; guides recount an unsolved gangland shooting on site, and staff report music playing with the sound system off, plus footsteps and apparitions.
