OVERVIEW

Walgren Lake (historically Alkali Lake), an 80-plus-acre lake in the Sandhills southeast of Hay Springs, is the setting for one of Nebraska's best-known cryptid legends, dubbed the Alkali Lake Monster; a skeptical view credits newspaperman John G. Maher with popularizing the tale.

REPORTED ACTIVITY

A 1921 account by J.A. Johnson and two companions described a large, alligator-like animal with a horn between its eyes; periodic sightings of a dark shape in the water have followed.
