OVERVIEW
Sahara el Beyda, the White Desert Protected Area, lies in the Farafra depression 45 km north of Qasr al-Farafra. Its large white chalk formations were carved by wind and sand; the park covers 300 km² and shelters rhim and dorcas gazelles, Barbary sheep, jackals and fennec and sand foxes.
HISTORY
Established as a protected area in 2002; part of the park lies in the Farafra Oasis (New Valley Governorate).
REPORTED ACTIVITY
HEARSAY. Wikipedia's list of reportedly haunted locations says the ghost of Akhenaten is said to wander the Farafra or White Desert, 'reported by dozens of tourists and nomads', because the priests, angered when he abolished Egypt's gods, cursed him to wander the deserts forever. No witness, date or source is given; the park's own article has nothing on it. Filed UNVETTED.
VISITING
The park lies 45 km north of Qasr al-Farafra. Visiting arrangements are not recorded in the source.
