OVERVIEW

A meteorite crater about 880 metres across in the Great Sandy Desert, formed roughly 300,000 years ago. It is known to the Jaru people as Kandimalal, and their traditional accounts describe two rainbow snakes whose passage formed the nearby creeks, with the crater the place one emerged.

HISTORY

The crater was recorded by Europeans in 1947 during an aerial survey.

REPORTED ACTIVITY

The 2005 film Wolf Creek is FICTION and its events did not happen. It is set at the crater and has shaped the site's reputation almost entirely. The genuine content here is geological and Jaru traditional knowledge.

VISITING

Remote national park, reached by unsealed road; access is seasonal and the road is often closed in the wet. Carry water and fuel.
