OVERVIEW

A Georgian brick house built around 1790 for grain merchant Charles Hillyard III, purchased by the state in 1965 to serve as the official residence of Delaware's governors.

REPORTED ACTIVITY

The earliest recorded sighting dates to 1820, when a Methodist preacher described passing a colonial-dressed man on the stairs; later residents, including Governor Charles Terry Jr., reported an apparition helping himself to wine, alongside recurring reports of a Revolutionary-era figure and a young girl in a red gingham dress.

VISITING

The working governor's residence offers public tours by appointment on weekdays.
