OVERVIEW
A pub built against and into the sandstone of Castle Rock below Nottingham Castle, whose caves may have been the castle's brewhouse; it claims a founding date of 1189, though the oldest parts of the building are of the 1650s and the name is first recorded in 1799. In the Rock Lounge a dusty model ship hangs in a glass case: the Cursed Galleon.
HISTORY
The galleon was left by a sailor, in one version to settle a bill. The pub's tradition holds that the last three people to clean it died unexpectedly within twelve months, so it was cased and left; a landlord photographed beneath it is said to have vanished from the frame. A landlord of 1894–1914, George Henry Ward, 'Yorkey', is the pub's resident ghost.
REPORTED ACTIVITY
The galleon, Yorkey, and figures in the caves and the cellars are told by the pub and written up by Visit Nottinghamshire and LeftLion. It is pub lore with a pub's evidence for it; the entry says so. The galleon itself belongs in the ODPSI objects registry.
VISITING
A working pub, open daily; the Rock Lounge and caves are the public rooms.
