OVERVIEW

An arid stretch of the Bolsón de Mapimí where the borders of Durango, Chihuahua and Coahuila meet, inside the Mapimí Biosphere Reserve. The area has an unusually high concentration of magnetite from frequent meteorite falls.

REPORTED ACTIVITY

Pilot Francisco Sarabia reported his radio and instruments failing over the area in the 1930s. In 1970 an off-course Athena rocket fired from White Sands came down here, 400 miles from its target, prompting a US recovery operation. Reserve researchers say they use radio and GPS without interference, and much of the lore appears to have been amplified locally in the 1970s.

VISITING

The reserve is accessible by desert track, usually with a local guide from Ceballos.
