THE OBJECT
Two carved heads about 6 cm high, found in 1971 by Colin and Leslie Robson in the garden of their house on Rede Avenue, Hexham. Passed to the Museum of Antiquities at Newcastle and then to the Celtic scholar Dr Anne Ross, who published them in Archaeologia Aeliana (1973) as possibly Iron Age; Desmond Craigie, a previous tenant, said he had made them in 1956 for his daughter, and geological analysis found them moulded rather than carved. They were later held by Dr Don Robins and are recorded as lost; their whereabouts have been unknown since the late 1970s.
REPORTED ACTIVITY
The Robsons and their neighbours the Dodds reported objects moving and a half-human, half-animal figure in the house; Ross said she saw a similar figure at her Southampton home while she had the heads. Paul Screeton, who has followed the case since 1981, published Quest for the Hexham Heads in 2012.
