THE OBJECT

A limestone figurine 36 cm high from the Chalcolithic period (about 3500 BC): a naked, pregnant woman with short outstretched arms, found at Lemba near Paphos and displayed in the Cyprus Museum, Nicosia.

REPORTED ACTIVITY

Online videos and listicles call her a 'Goddess of Death' that killed owner after owner following an 1878 discovery, and a curator in an Edinburgh museum. The Cyprus Mail (Jean Christou, 27 November 2022) found none of it holds: the figure was discovered in the 1970s, is in the Cyprus Museum, not Edinburgh — 'great story, but they are all hoax'. Recorded here AS a hoax.
