THE OBJECT
A charm-stone set in a silver coin, the heirloom of the Lockharts of Lee, South Lanarkshire. It is kept in a gold snuffbox given by Empress Maria Theresa of Austria to her general Count James Lockhart in 1789. It remains a family possession and is not on public display.
REPORTED ACTIVITY
Brought back, by family tradition, from the crusades of the 14th century and used as a healing charm: 'The fame of the Lee Penny spread through Scotland and Northern England and there are many recorded occasions when it was employed with apparent success' (Wikipedia, Clan Lockhart). The Society of Antiquaries of Scotland published a paper on it in 1923 (not read in full for this batch).
