THE OBJECT

A mirror in The Myrtles, a plantation house of 1796 in St. Francisville, Louisiana, now a bed-and-breakfast and the subject of ghost tours. The house is also on the Global Incident Map.

REPORTED ACTIVITY

HOAX. The mirror is said to trap the spirits of Sara Woodruff and two of her children because it was not covered after they died of poison in a cake baked by an enslaved woman, Chloe. The records contradict it: there are 'no known records of the Woodruffs owning a slave named Chloe or Cloe'; Mary Octavia, said to have died, lived into adulthood; and Sara, James and Cornelia Woodruff died of yellow fever (Wikipedia, Legends of Myrtles Plantation). The story of a murderous enslaved woman, told as entertainment, is recorded here because it is false.

WHERE IT IS NOW

On public display — kept by The Myrtles (private owners). The Myrtles, St. Francisville, Louisiana, United States.
